Power Meters

Optical power meters are commonly used to measure absolute light power in dBm. For dBm measurement of light transmission power, calibration of fibre optic power meters is essential. A fibre optic power meter is also used with an optical light source for measuring loss or relative power level in dB. Alternatively, some users may prefer an integrated two-way LTS

, or a simple LTS. All hand held optical power meters from Kingfisher are coloured blue for easy identification, have interchangeable connectors and long battery life, calibration certificates and a 3 year warranty and calibration cycle.

Light Sources

A fibre optic source is commonly used with a meter to measure optical fibre attenuation or insertion loss. A handheld light source can also be used as a tone generator for use with a clip on identifier, or power meter test tone detector.

This range of optical sources are coloured yellow for easy identification, are compliant with IEC825 1 and 21CFR1040.10 Laser and LED

Safety Standards. They have a 3 year warranty and calibration cycle.

Laser source options are available for most optical fibre optic applications. The multimode LED sources feature improved repeatability and standards compliance and come with mandrel wraps to improve modal distribution. Also available in convenient Test Kits.

OTDR

The Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is a mid-level handheld tool for certifying and fault finding on fibre optic cable systems. Loss Test Sets

An Optical Loss Test Set is used to test attenuation and absolute power level on transmission systems. It combines a source and meter in one unit. Two LTS

s are usually required to measure losses on installed systems.

All LTSs from Kingfisher are coloured red for easy identification. These Autotest instruments are interoperable with any other Kingfisher Autotest instruments with matching wavelengths.

These LTSs offer superior measurement stability in practical use. When a test lead is repeatedly re-connected to the light source, the coupled power varies by < 0.1dB. An LTS can also be used as a tone generator for use with a clip-on identifier.

The KI 7700 series LTS (Loss Test Set) combines a source and meter in one handheld instrument. A pair of instruments are ideal for measuring optic cable loss, featuring a tone source facility for quick identification and continuity checking.

Two-Way Loss Test Sets

These two-way Loss Test Sets perform bi-directional loss measurement in two directions simultaneously. They are today's easiest, fastest, most accurate and most integrated field instruments.

Fibre Test Attenuators

Variable optical attenuators are commonly used to reduce the absolute light power in a fibre. Typical test applications include linearity testing, receiver sensitivity/range/BER

testing, and determining optimum fixed attenuator values for an installed system.

In most cases, a VOA

is used in conjunction with an optical power meter. Typically, it is important that the optical attenuator does not degrade the passing signal, has a low sensitivity to wavelength, and low minimum insertion loss.

Warsash Scientific offer an inexpensive in-line adjustable attenuator for occasional use, or a high performance instrument with excellent overall specifications, and automation features that are useful in either stand-alone or computer controlled situations.
